How to set up your home studio
This can be a tricky one: how do you set up your virtual Pilates class so that you can see your instructor, but they can also see you? What technology should you use?
Ideally, you want to set up your webcam/video so that your instructor can see as much of your body as they can. This way they can give you optimal feedback throughout the class, which improves the class experience. But it’s also important for you to be able to see the instructor when they demonstrate the Pilates exercises.
Mat Setup
We’ve found that the best option is for your mat to be horizontal to your video setup. I.e., the long edge of your mat should be facing the camera.
Technology Setup
The best option for this is to have your laptop/device raised in front of your mat, so that you can easily glance up at the instructor throughout the class.
Tilting the camera down slightly will allow the instructor to see your body more clearly. A webcam is ideal, as you can then raise the camera for standing work. However, this isn’t necessary.
Internet Setup
A good internet connection is necessary to optimize your group Pilates experience. A minimum download speed of 512Kbps and minimum upload speed of 128Kbps are required for a group video class. You can check your internet connection speed here.
Zoom Setup
We recommend pinning the instructor’s video, so that you can have the biggest screen possible to see your instructor.
To pin the instructor’s video, click the “…” in the top right-hand corner of the image, and select “Pin Video”.
However, some people prefer to keep their class in Gallery mode, as it can feel a little more interactive.
Ultimately, you have to find the setup that works for you. Our instructors are here to give you support and guidance, and they can work with you to find the right setup for your space.
